University Tower

In addition to setting the time, the clock transmitted information
by sound signals produced by the associated bells

The clock has played a central role in the University daily life for the activities of the institution have long been organised according to it.

The existent, dated 1866-67, is the latest of a long series of clocks. Similarly, its tower replaced, in 1728, another one that had the exact same functions.

According to the Old Statutes, the University clock would always be quarter of hour behind the town clock.

From the four bells in the tower, the best known is the one that faces the river and is famously known as Goat.

Even today this bell is heard in the evening and in the day after, if school day. Likewise, at seven thirty in the morning it plays again, now accompanied by another bell. This one, because it has larger dimensions and a bass sound, the students’ slang names it with a similar name but in an augmentative degree to the Goat.

Today, as in the past, the bells also call upon the academic community for the solemn acts performed in the Great Hall, and toll in funeral tone for the death of a teacher.

The Tower can be visited everyday but always by a small number of people at a time. Though it does not exceed 34 meters in height, at the top, those who prove themselves brave enough to overcome the 180 steps of the building can enjoy an amazing view.

The tour is not recommended for people with cardio-respiratory problems, or suffering from claustrophobia or vertigo.
