CHANGES IN THE TOURIST CIRCUIT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF COIMBRA
In the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic, and concerned with the safety and health of all, the University of Coimbra has defined a set of measures to ensure the necessary conditions for the use and visit of its heritage and places, taking into account government recommendations.
It is of the upmost importance for the University to safely accommodate its visitors, with a visiting circuit that allow them to enjoy the historical and cultural richness of its heritage.
PLACES TO BE VISITED:
The following places can be visited:
✓ Palace of Schools: Joanina Library, Saint Michael’s Chapel, Royal Palace
✓ Chemistry Lab
✓ Botanic Garden
The following places are closed:
✓ University Tower
✓ Physics Cabinet and Natural History Gallery (of the Science Museum)
✓ Boiler House
THE UNIVERSITY OF COIMBRA GUARANTEES:
✓ Implementation of COVID-19 prevention measures by its employees, from hand hygiene, social distance to hygiene and disinfection of surfaces;
✓ Disinfectant gel available to the visitor in all visitable places;
✓ Toilets, handrails, counters and other touch surfaces cleaned regularly;
GUIDELINES OF VISITS:
✓ It is mandatory to wear a mask during visits to indoor places;
✓ The minimum mandatory safety distance of 2 meters must be maintained;
✓ The places will have unidirectional paths, in order to avoid the crossing of people in all visitable places;
✓ Entries to the Joanina Library (through the Academic Prison) will be limited to 10 people every 5 minutes;
✓ The Saint Michael’s Chapel and the rooms of the Royal Palace will have a limit of 10 visitors simultaneously.
Access to the tourist spaces of the University of Coimbra (UC) requires the possession of a valid ticket that must be presented to UC employees;
The Tourism University of Coimbra reserves the right of admission to its spaces whenever the attitude and behavior of visitors demonstrate disrespect for the law, visiting norms of the institution, employees or heritage;
All celebrations, religious, official/protocol ceremonies and academic festivities will overlap with the normal functioning of the tourist circuit of the University of Coimbra, and may compromise visits to certain areas or even lead to their temporary closure;
Keep throughout the visit the documentation necessary for presentation at the ticket office, including proof of identification, the ticket is personal and not transferable;
Observe the indications provided by the employees and the signs of each place, namely the warnings, danger indications and conditioned access;
Contribute to ensuring good movement conditions in each location and avoid making noise or having attitudes that disrupt academic activity and other visitors;
Do not tamper with the assets, objects on display and do not pick plants when visiting the Botanical Gardens;
Pay special attention when traveling in areas with obstacles and steps;
Given the characteristics of the Tower, whose accessibility consists of 184 steps and a narrow area, greater care is required for visitors with walking difficulties, dizziness or heart problems. Entry is not allowed for children under 6 years old;
Smoking is not allowed in unauthorized places;
It is not allowed to eat inside the visiting spaces;
Dispose of all debris in suitable containers, in particular property-damaging chewing gum;
Pets other than guide dogs are not allowed;
The use of drones inside spaces is prohibited, except when properly authorized;
The use of tripods and selfie sticks inside visiting spaces is prohibited;
For the sake of cleaning and maintenance, toilets are closed for two periods throughout the day, whose hours are posted on the door;
Flash photography is prohibited inside visiting spaces;
It is forbidden to photograph on the Joanina Library Noble Floor;
The holding of photographic sessions, filming and activities inside the Palace of Schools necessarily require prior authorization and are subject to specific conditions and tariffs;
The public use of the image of the UC spaces, regardless of the support and purposes, necessarily requires prior authorization;
It is recommended to all visitors:
Speak in low tone;
Use the mobile phone in silent mode to avoid disturbing other visitors;
In the event of an emergency, visitors must leave the premises as instructed by UC staff;
Contact our employees whenever you need any clarification, support or if you notice any irregularities.
The University of Coimbra has made an effort to improve accessibility for all audiences. However, given the constraints arising from the architecture of the spaces we alert visitors to the following situations:
Palace of Schools
Royal Palace: not accessible to wheelchairs | not recommended for people with walking difficulties.
Joanina Library: Wheelchair access restricted to the Noble Floor, if you come in a wheelchair or are an escort, you should contact one of the turismo employees.
Tower: not accessible to wheelchairs | not recommended for people with walking difficulties.
Science Museum
Jesus College: not accessible to wheelchairs | not recommended for people with walking difficulties.
Botanic Garden
The Garden is undergoing conservation and requalification works that temporarily prevent access to some areas. We also inform that there is no access to some areas of the Garden for visitors with reduced mobility, baby carriages, among others.
