Botanical Garden
The Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra was created at the initiative of the Marquis of Pombal in 1772. The Garden, where history, science and nature meet, extends over 13 ha. The Botanical Garden is located in the city center, with terraces ranging from University Uptown to the Mondego River. Since 2013 is a World Heritage Site.
Central Square, considered the heart of the garden, was the first area to be completed in 1791, the Greenhouses, the Woods, the Systematic and Medical Schools, with 150 flower beds for the study of unique botanical collections that serve the teaching, support the research and promote the conservation of biodiversity.
